What is a Tax Credit, and Can I Get One this Year?

There are many tax credits available for the year 2016 and 2017. With regards to home improvements and your HVAC system in particular, there are tax credits available for both years. Here are the tax credits available for 2016 and the ones you can plan for for the year 2017.
2016 Energy Efficiency Tax Credits
If you purchased one of the following energy star appliances or home improvements during the year of 2016, you can claim them on your taxes. 2016 was the last year for many energy efficiency tax credits, so we hope you took advantage of the follow savings on energy efficient HVAC systems and other home improvements. Energy Credits for Home Improvements and Appliances
This energy efficient tax credit applies to home improvements and new energy efficient appliances on your existing primary residence. The tax credit is for 10% of the cost, up to $500; or a specific amount anywhere from $50 – $300 on the following items:
- Air Source Heat Pumps
- Biomass Stoves
- Central Air Conditioning
- Gas, Propane, or Oil Hot Water Boilers or Furnaces
- Water Heaters
- Windows, Doors, and & Skylights
Energy Credits for Larger Energy Systems
This tax credit awards home owners who installed clean energy systems in their homes. This tax credit is applicable on the follow home improvements:
- Fuel Cells
- Geothermal Heat Pumps
- Small Residential Wind Turbines
- Solar Energy Panels
- Solar Energy Water Heating Systems
2017 Energy Efficiency Tax Credits
In the year 2017, you can receive a tax credit for solar energy systems installed before December 31st, 2021. The Tax credit is 30% of the cost of the solar energy system, and it has no upper limit.
