How to Save on your Home’s AC Bill

June 15, 2017

Summer is almost here, and warmer weather is right around the corner. The temperature is rising, but your electric bill doesn’t have to! Check out these practical ways to reduce your A/C bill this season:

how to save on the ac bill

Close the Shades

Most of the heat that enters your home comes directly from the sun’s rays shining through windows. Always be sure to close shades and blinds when you aren’t at home. If your house gets enough sun, you may even be able to get away with closing them while you’re there, too.

Plant Trees

Planting tall, leafy trees around the outside of your home can boost the beauty of your outdoor living space while providing additional shade. The less sunlight that shines into your home, the less your indoor temperature rises. Along these same lines, the more shaded area around your home the cooler the outside of your home will be; and subsequently the cooler the inside will be as well.

Dress Light

Put those sweatshirts and jackets away – you won’t be needing them with hot weather approaching. Dress lighter when doing things around the house to better adapt to higher temperatures in your home. You can also switch to lighter bed sheets or stow away your comforters until the cold weather comes back around.

Get Solar Screens

These are window screens made of a mesh-like material that can stop up to 70% of solar energy from entering your home. This option is best for east and west-facing windows. An added benefit of solar screens is that they will help keep bugs away! A similar option is window films, which are sheets of transparent metal that reflect the heat from the sun, rather than absorb it.

Use Zone Cooling

Zone cooling is an HVAC option which allows you to cool temperatures in the home room by room. This means you can cool only the rooms you’re using, and save energy in the rooms you’re not! For example, if you’re spending the day in your home office, you can shut off the air conditioning to all other areas of the home. This is one of the best ways to save on your A/C bill! If you don’t have zone cooling with your home’s HVAC system, get in touch with a local Maryland HVAC service and have them install this type of system; it’ll save you lots of money in the long run.
